About This Macintosh--Find the Operating System and Processor on Your System

You often need to know which Macintosh operating system or processor you have when installing software on your system. Sometimes you will see different software installers for different versions of the Macintosh OS. Likewise, you may see different software installers for Macintoshes based on the PowerPC processor and the Intel Core Duo processor.

If you are unsure of either your operating system version or whether your Mac is PowerPC-based or Intel-based, you can use the following simple procedure to find out.

  1. Under the Apple Menu, select About This Mac.
  2. Take note of the Mac OS X version and type of processor specified.

Below are some examples:

PowerPC running 10.3.9
This computer has PowerPC processor chip and runs version 10.3.9 of the Mac OS X operating system.
Intel Mac running 10.4.7 This computer has an Intel Core Duo processor chip and runs version 10.4.7 of the Mac OS X operating system.
