Clean Your Server Inbox

If an automated message from our mail system directed you to this web page, your server inbox is already too large. Though at no time will we prevent email from being delivered to you, we recommend that take the actions described below to prevent future problems that could impact your ability to collect your email.

As explained in Journey of an Email Message, your server inbox holds the email messages you access via SquirrelMail, Eudora, or similar programs. If you have too many messages in your server inbox, it becomes difficult to access your mail.

Ideally, your server inbox has only new mail and, if you check email on multiple systems, a few days worth of messages you have already accessed. There are two ways to reach this ideal state.

  • Download messages and remove them from your server inbox in Eudora (or another POP mail client such as Outlook or Mac Mail). Change your settings to shorten the length of time you "leave email on the server." We recommend leaving mail on the server for 5 days. Read Manage Email on Multiple Systems for more information.

  • Move messages from your SquirrelMail inbox into another SquirrelMail folder. When you move a message from your SquirrelMail inbox into a SquirrelMail folder, you move the message off your server inbox on the mail server into a folder in your SquirrelMail account.

  • Empty your trash folder in SquirrelMail by clicking the purge link next to your trash folder. Even if your server inbox is a reasonable size, it's a good idea to routinely empty your trash folder to keep your SquirrelMail account running smoothly.

If you follow the instructions above, you will keep your server inbox a manageable size. Want to know more about your server inbox size? You can check your server inbox by using the mail system information tool.
