Configuring Eudora Email When Off-campus

Those emailing from on-campus (at Haverford, Bryn Mawr, or Swarthmore), or entering our network from off-campus with VPN or through our dial-in server should configure Eudora as explained in the web page Installation Instructions for Eudora. However, other off-campus email users must configure their systems as instructed below.

Note: Effective July 19, 2006, off-campus email users must use one of configuration options described below to email ANY user. For security reasons, you will no longer be able to email Haverford addresses from off-campus--unless you select one of the four options listed below.

Select any of the following options to send email from off-campus:

  1. Use Webmail and continue to use your Haverford account.
  2. Forward mail to another account and use that account.
  3. Use Haverford's dial-in server or VPN (Virtual Private Networking) to identify your computer as a remote member of the Haverford community, and use Eudora with the standard on-campus configuration.
  4. Configure Eudora (or another mail client) to work with your non-Haverford off-campus Internet Service Provider (ISP, as instructed below).

Instructions to Configure Eudora to work with a non-Haverford ISP

This option is recommended only if:

  • You have your own computer
  • You get a lot of email and will be away from campus for a while
  • You have an ISP which allows you to configure Eudora as described below. Most ISPs impose restrictions on this. If your ISP imposes restrictions, you can use VPN (Virtual Private Networking) to identify your computer as a remote member of the Haverford community, rather than following the instructions below.

Note: If you use Eudora with a non-Haverford ISP, and you do not follow these directions, you will still be able to read all email. However, you will not be able to send email. This is a security measure to prevent individuals unassociated with our campus from using our equipment to send messages anonymously.*

  1. Make sure Eudora is already configured to work on-campus. If you are not sure about this, follow the Eudora Installation Instructions at http://www.haverford.edu/acc/software/instructions/eudora_instructions.html.

  2. Find out the name of the SMTP host your Internet Service Provider uses. You should be able to find this by contacting tech support for the Internet provider and asking. If you are using a network on a college campus, ask the computing center.

  3. Configure Eudora (or another mail client) with your ISP's SMTP host.
    1. In Eudora 5.1 for Windows:
      1. Go to the Tools menu and select Settings...
      2. Select Getting Started from the menu on the left
      3. Enter the SMTP host name your ISP tech support gave you into the SMTP Server (Outgoing) prompt.
    2. In Eudora 5.1 for Macintosh:
      1. Go to the Special menu and select Settings...
      2. Select Getting Started from the menu on the left
      3. Enter the SMTP host name your ISP tech support gave you into the SMTP Server prompt.

  4. Configure the default domain as haverford.edu
    1. In Eudora 5.1 for Windows:
      1. Go to the Tools menu and select Options...
      2. Select Sending Mail from the menu on the left
      3. Enter haverford.edu in the section, "Domain to add to unqualified names"
    2. In Eudora 5.1 for Macintosh:
      1. Go to the Special menu and select Settings...
      2. Select Sending Mail from the menu on the left
      3. Enter haverford.edu in the section, "Domain to add to unqualified names"

 


*Historical note: The security measures which necessitated this web page were put into affect April 1998. Prior to this time, a number of non-Haverford individuals had been taking advantage of Haverford's mail server to send out mass mailings of junk mail (often called "spams"). Many of these mass mailings were for blatantly illegal scams, and the excess traffic seriously slowed our mail server. Until July 19, 2006, you were able to send email to Haverford addresses from off-campus using your on-campus mail settings. However, this option was disabled to provide additional security.
