Enable SSL on Your POP or IMAP Email Client

On Wednesday, August 12, the Computing Center made a security change to Haverford's email server. You must now use a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to check your email. Only those desktop clients configured to use SSL can get new email. This is the case for all desktop email clients, regardless of whether you are using the IMAP or POP protocol to get email.

Who is Affected by This Change?

You are affected if . . .

  • You read Haverford email with Eudora or Thunderbird, our supported desktop mail clients.
  • You read Haverford email with a desktop client, such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Mac Mail, Thunderbird, or Entourage.

You are not affected if . . .

  • You ONLY use web mail--Squirrelmail or Emumail--to read Haverford email.
  • You forward your Haverford email to a non-Haverford account, such as Gmail, Yahoo, or Verizon.

What Action Must Affected Users Take?

You must upgrade or configure all your desktop email clients to work with POP with SSL or IMAP with SSL.

Make sure that you follow the instructions below for all email clients you use to get Haverford email -- do this on your home computers as well as campus systems.

NOTE: The instructions below assume that your client is already configured to get Haverford email. For general email installation instructions, including our mail server names, see Install and Configure Email Clients -- General Instructions.
