Consequences of Copyright Violation at Haverford College

When a copyright holder or their agent contacts Haverford about an occurrence of copyright violation, the school is required to take action. If you are suspected of infringement, a representative of College Information Resources will confront you. To resolve the matter, you must meet with the Dean of Student Life. The procedure below outlines the consequences if you are found in violation of college policy and U.S. copyright law.

First Offense:
• You will be required to remove all infringing material and make a written statement of your commitment to adhere to Haverford College’s policy on copyright and acceptable use;
• Failure to respond to the violation will result in loss of network access, including access to the Internet:
• A fine of up to $75 may be assessed.

Second Offense:
• You will be required to remove all infringing material and make a written statement of your commitment to adhere to Haverford College’s policy on copyright and acceptable use;
• You will lose access to the college network, including access to the Internet, for a period of three weeks;
• A fine of up to $250 may be assessed.

A third violation would indicate a student’s serious disregard for college policy and the community and would necessitate a discussion of the student’s ability to appropriately use the college’s Information Technology resources. At this point, a permanent ban from the campus network would be considered.

Third Offense:
• You will be referred to the college’s judicial system for adjudication by the appropriate body or individual;
• You will lose access to the college network, including Internet access, for six weeks with the possibility of permanent ban from the network for the remainder of your time at Haverford;
• A fine of up to $500 may be assessed.
