I. INTRODUCTION:
Academic Computing uses a special program called Keyserver
to regulate those programs for which Haverford owns a limited number
of licenses. Theses include FileMaker, Photoshop and several other academic
programs. You will need to install the keyserver program on your computer
in order to use these regulated programs. You must be physically connected
to the campus network to use keyed software. You can also use KeyCheckout
to reserve a software license (as you would a library book) for use
on a home computer or other computer that does not have a dedicated
network connection.
II. INSTALLATION:
Download the KeyServer Client for either Windows or Macintosh from
Haverford's Software
Download page. Detailed download instructions are available from
there.
KeyServer installs KeyAccess, KeyCheckout, KeyVerify
and related system and administration files. The installation/update
process can be done in your office or on your home computer while dialed
into Haverford's network.
III. MAKING A PORTABLE KEY:
To open the Portable Keys Window, double click on the
KeyCheckout Icon on your desktop (Mac) or go to the Start
Menu, Programs, KeyServer Folder and then select KeyCheckout
(PC). You must be connected to the network in order to "check out"
a license for use.
You will see the following screen:

- Find the desired program
in the upper portion of the window and drag it onto one of the local
disks (in the bottom window).
- Enter the duration for
which you need the license (up to the specified maximum limit).
- You can now disconnect
from the network and use the application(s) you checked out.
- When your "key"
expires, you can reconnect to the network and check out the program
again.
