Install and Configure Netscape 4.7 for Windows

Install Netscape
Start for the First Time
Configure for Use at Haverford

The newest version of Netscape is Netscape Communicator 4.7. These instructions will explain how to install a copy of Netscape 4.7 for Windows that will be supported by Haverford’s Academic Computing Center. Netscape includes four sub-components:

  • Netscape Navigator. This is the web browser supported by ACC. Our Student Assistants staffed in the public computer labs and at the Helpdesk have been trained to provide support for this component of Communicator.
  • Netscape Messenger. This piece of Netscape Communicator lets you send and receive messages from within Netscape. Messenger is only supported by ACC to the extent that it is used for sending an email message from within Netscape; Eudora Light is still the recommended program for sending and receiving email messages.
  • Netscape Composer. Composer is a graphical HTML editor used for creating web pages. It works very much like Claris Home Page or the Editor in Netscape Navigator Gold. The ACC does not currently provide support for Composer; users who require assistance with an HTML editor are encouraged to use Claris Home Page instead.
  • AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). AIM lets you talk in real time to other AIM users. Haverford does not support AIM and recommends deleting this component from your computer.  Also, please note that registering for AIM, or any other online service that requires you to enter your email username or other personal information, can invite unwanted contact from strangers. This unwanted contact can range from unsolicited email to requests for credit card numbers, passwords, addresses and other sensitive information. Be sure to protect your personal information. Never give out your Haverford password, or use it to register for other sites. If you have any questions or concerns about requests you receive for personal information, please contact Academic Computing or send email to compctr@haverford.edu.

Install Netscape Communicator 4.7

If you already have an older version of Netscape installed on your computer, installing Netscape 4.7 into the same directory should preserve all of your settings (bookmarks, preferences, etc.).

  1. The Netscape Installer is located in the Network Install tab in the Add/Remove Control Panel.
  2. After starting the installer, you will see a window labeled Netscape Communicator 4.7 Setup. This window contains important information related to the installation. Be sure to read all directions in these boxes carefully at each step. When you’re ready, click the button marked Next at the bottom of the box.
  3. In the next box, you will be asked to read the license agreement and to agree to it. Read the agreement, and if you agree, click the Yes button.
  4. The next window will be Setup Type. Choose the option labeled Custom. It is recommended that you leave the directory where Netscape is to be installed as the default. Click Next to continue.
  5. A message may appear informing you that the directory does not exist. Click Yes to create the directory.
  6. The next message asks you which components you would like to install, and it lists five. Clear the checkboxes next to Import utility and Addr. Book Palm Sync. Your screen should look like:

    Netscape Install Screen

If you have an older version of Netscape Navigator installed on your computer, at this point you may receive an informational message telling you that if you have plug-ins or helper applications installed for the older version, you will need to reinstall them. This will not affect most users, but some people will have to obtain newer versions of plug-ins in order to access sites that require them. For now, you can continue by clicking OK. (If you do not have an older version of Navigator installed, you can proceed directly to the next step.)
  7. The next window will be Setup Associations. The file types listed will be associated with Communicator components. Click Next to continue.
  8. The next screen asks you to configure three preferences. You should uncheck the middle option Make Netscape Netcenter my home page. Click Next to continue.
  9. Next you will be asked which Program Folder you would like to contain your Netscape Communicator menu shortcuts (that is, in which menu under the Start menu you would like your Communicator programs to appear). We recommend you just leave “Netscape Communicator” in the box and click Next to continue.
  10. Finally, you will be told: “Setup has enough information to start copying the program files.” If you like, you can double-check the information listed. To proceed with the install click the Install button. You will receive the message “Please wait” followed by “Installing Netscape Communicator 4.7 files.” This could take several minutes to complete, depending upon your system.
  11. After a short time, a message will appear: “Would you like to view the README file now?” The README file contains some information about compatibility with other versions of Netscape and known bugs in the program. If you wish to read it now, you may. If you prefer not to, it will always be available for you to read later. To continue without reading it, click No.
  12. The message appears: “Setup is complete.” Click OK.
  13. Last, you will be asked whether you want to restart your computer. You should select the option Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click OK to restart your computer.

Start Netscape for the First Time and Create a Profile

When your computer is finished restarting, you should see a new icon on the desktop labeled Netscape Communicator. Now you just have to configure Netscape with your own information.

  1. If you do not wish to use AOL Instant Messanger, remove the AOL Instant Messenger shortcut icon by dragging it to the Recycle Bin. We recommend this.
  2. Double-click on the Netscape Communicator icon.
  3. If this is the first time you have installed Netscape on your computer you need to create a profile. Read the box carefully and click Next when you’re ready to proceed. If you already have a profile, skip to letter.
  4. Next you will be asked to enter your full name and your email address. It is important that you enter your real full name and your correct email address so that the work you do with Netscape will be correctly identified as your own. Once you have done this, click Next.
  5. You will be asked to confirm the profile name and profile directory location. Just click Next.
  6. The next screen that appears asks you for the Outgoing Mail Server information. Enter the text “smtp.haverford.edu” in the field labeled Outgoing (SMTP) mail server, then click Next to continue.
  7. The next screen asks you for the Incoming Mail Server information. Enter your email username in the first field, for example “dwarner”. Then enter the text “pop.haverford.edu” in the second field. Click Next to continue.
  8. The next screen that appears asks you for the Newsgroups Server information. In the field labeled News (NNTP) server enter the text “news.haverford.edu”. Click Next to continue.
  9. You may get a message, “ Navigator is no longer registered to handle Internet shortcuts. Would you like to register Netscape as your default browser?” If so check the box Do not perform this check in the future and click Yes to make Netscape your default browser.
  10. Netscape opens and the program is ready to use. In addition to the main browser window, you may see a window with five buttons: Navigator, Inbox, Newsgroups, Address Book, and Composer. If this button window is in your way, click the close button (Netscape Install Screen) in the upper right corner. This moves the buttons to a more discreet location in the bottom right corner of the Navigator window.

Configure Netscape for use at Haverford

Although you can now use Netscape, you will want to configure it a bit more to use the program most efficiently. A couple of extra minutes doing this now will save you time and trouble down the line.

  1. Open the Preferences dialog box by choosing Preferences from the Edit menu in Netscape. A window like the one below should appear.
  2. In the left-hand pane labeled Category, select the word Navigator. In the frame labeled Navigator you can specify your default Home Page. This is the page that appears when you first start Navigator and when you click the Home button. You can type http://www.haverford.edu/ to make Haverford’s site your Home Page:

    Netscape Install Screen

  3. Next, you’ll want to edit the Mail & Newsgroups preferences. Locate the item Mail & Newsgroups in the list in the left-hand pane. Directly to the left of the item Mail & Newsgroups is a small plus sign (+) inside a square. Click on the plus sign to reveal more options.
  4. The first of these new options is Identity. Click on the item labeled Identity to view the Identity Preferences. Check to make sure that your name and your email address are correct. If they’re not, you can correct them now. You may also wish to type “Haverford College” in the Organization box. You can leave the Reply-To box empty, since it is the same as your email address. See below for example of setting up your identity.

  5. When you’re finished setting your Preferences, click OK to return to the Netscape browser window.

You’re finished installing and configuring Netscape Communicator. For more help with Netscape, choose Help Contents from the Help menu, or hit the F1 key at any time while using Netscape.
