Network Service Interruptions
During Spring Break

Subject: Network Service Interruptions During Spring Break
Networking & Systems has scheduled multiple service interruptions
during spring break to allow for the installation of vendor provided software
updates to campus network infrastructure. These updates provide support
for the new daylight saving time, operating system stability, and corrections
for known security defects. The majority of the maintenance schedule will
be spent installing vendor supplied software updates to network hardware
distributed in buildings across campus.
The maintenance schedule is described below:
Network Service Interruption -- Friday, March 9th, 11:00 PM to
11:59 PM
At approximately 11:00 PM we will install a vendor supplied software update
to the campus core network router, causing a 10 minute interruption of
service. During the interruption, the campus network including the college
website will be unreachable from the Internet. When this procedure has
been completed, Internet access to the campus and the college website
will be restored. Computers located on campus may continue to experience
service interruptions for an additional 20 minutes while updates are applied
to remaining network hardware located in our Stokes Hall data center.
This includes access to email, file, and print servers.
Email Service Interruption -- Friday, March 9th at 11:00 PM through
Saturday, March 10th at 4:00 AM
Concurrently with the network service interruption, we will also apply
software updates to our college email server. Email service will be unavailable
during a five hour maintenance period beginning at 11:00 PM on Friday
March 9th. During this time, users will not be able to retrieve email
messages from the college servers. Web based email access (emumail and
squirrelmail) will be unavailable as well. No mail will be lost during
the maintenance period. Mail sent or received during this period will
be queued and delivered when mail service is restored.
Network Service Interruption In Campus Buildings -- Monday, March
12th Beginning at 8:00 PM
On Monday, March 12th at 8:00 PM, we will begin installing vendor supplied
software updates to network equipment distributed across campus. This
will result in a series of short interruptions in network service as staff
members update network hardware in individual buildings. Typically, most
on-campus users will experience several five minute interruptions in service,
while software patches are applied to building network equipment. These
interruptions include access to the Internet, email, file, and print servers.
