Summer 2008 FAQ

Can I get an Ethernet connection from my HCA summer apartment?

Yes, if you are a Haverford or Bryn Mawr student. The cost is $40 per computer connection for the entire summer, or $25 for either half of the summer. You will receive a connection request packet when you pick up your keys.

Does the connection request packet contain other information, like acceptable use policies and connection instructions?

When you pick up your keys from the HCA office, you will recieve the connection request packet which contains lots of useful information, aside from the request form. The packet has instructions on how to configure your computer to connect to the campus network if you are having trouble, as well as important information on Haverford's Acceptable Use Policy and Copyright Infringement Supplement. We ask all users to sign and return a copy of Haverford's Copyright Infringement Supplment along with the connection activation request and payment. Feel free to view the 2008 HCA Summer networking packet, if you would like to read over any of our summer networking policies.

What if more than one person in the apartment wants a connection?

The cost is per computer connection, not per apartment. Each person with a computer who wants an Ethernet connection must fill out a separate form and pay the fee. We will activate one jack per person who has paid the fee.

Can I get a reduction in the fee if I come late or leave early?

Yes. The cost is $40 for the full summer (May 19th to August 1st). You may also connect from May 19th to June 27th for $25, or from June 27th to August 1st for $25. Since we expect most people to rent a connection for the whole summer, the rest of this FAQ will refer to the $40 fee. For those who are renting for only half the summer, you can substitute $25 where it says $40 in this FAQ.

How long can I keep the connection?

We will begin activating connections on Monday, May 19th. If you pay $40, your jack will be active and have full support until 5:00 PM, Friday August 1st.

How fast will my jack be activated?

Ideally we will activate connections within the same business day we receive the request but there may be delays, especially during the first week.

Can any Ethernet equipped computer be connected to the network?

We cannot guarantee that any Ethernet equipped computer can be connected. Computers need certain hardware and software to connect to the network. Computers must support IP address assignment via DHCP. The $40 fee covers only the network connection; the cost of any necessary hardware and software is your responsibility. Support is provided for the following operating systems: Mac OS X, Vista, and Windows XP Pro. Students with other PC operating systems have also been able to connect. If you have problems getting your computer connected, either because of software or your Ethernet card, the student worker will work with you up to two hours. After that, our only guarantee is that we will refund your $40 and de-activate the connection.

Of Special Note if you are a Haverford student...

If your computer was connected to the network in a Haverford dorm last semester, it should be fairly easy for you to get your computer connected in HCA for the summer.

If you get a new computer you should be able to connect in the same way.

Of Special Note if you are a Bryn Mawr student...

If you were able to get a connection in the Bryn Mawr dorms this past year, you should be able to get a connection this summer. The computer must be configured to connect to the Haverford network via DHCP. If your computer was connected to the Bryn Mawr College network last semester, then it should already be properly configured. If not, you will need connection instructions. Bryn Mawr students - for problems with your e-mail account, contact the Bryn Mawr Computing Center Help Desk, 610-526-7440 or help@brynmawr.edu. If you are having trouble or need additional help, please see below.

How do I get help during the summer?

Please send e-mail to dormnet@haverford.edu  or call the Academic Computing Center (610-896-1480) during normal business hours Monday through Friday.

Why is there a charge?

Summer apartment rentals are considered business rentals, not part of the academic service of the college.  Even though classes are not in session, summer is one of the busiest times of the year for Computing Center staff as we accomplish all the things we cannot do while classes are in session - upgrading our servers, writing new documentation, installing new computers, fixing things that are broken, and on and on.

The network connection fees are used to pay a student worker who will provide the support that we cannot provide with the regular staff.

How do I actually connect?

As stated above, Haverford and Bryn Mawr students with computers that were connected to their dorm network during the school year should not require any configuration changes over the summer. However, instructions are available for all those who require them. Pick up a printed connection guide in Stokes 204, or read instructions on-line.

What about Wireless Access in HCA?

Wireless access to Haverford's network is unavailable in HCA during the summer.
