Install and Configure Eudora on the Macintosh

Download Eudora and configure it with the settings noted below.

  1. Download Eudora 6.2.4 Setup from http://eudora.com/download/
  2. Run the installer, selecting the defaults.
  3. When you see the "Welcome to Eudora" screen, click OK. That screen discusses three modes, which no longer apply.
  4. You get a message "Eudora junk disabled." Click OK. Junk mail is filtered through our MessageCenter.
  5. Eudora asks, "Would you like to import settings from another mail program?" Click No.
  6. Eudora asks, "Do you want to set Eudora to be your default mail handler?" Click Yes.
  7. Eudora should open into the settings screen, as illustrated below. If it does not, from the Special menu, select Tools.

  8. In the Getting Started section, enter information about your account (as detailed below) and click OK.

    User Name:
    Your email username, without the @haverford.edu (i.e. juser)
    Mail Server:
    pop.haverford.edu
    Real Name:
    Name by which you wish to be known. (i.e. Jane User, Professor User, Janey U.)
    SMTP Server:
    smtp.haverford.edu
    Email Address:
    Your email username@haverford.edu, with the @haverford.edu (i.e. juser@haverford.edu)
  9. Configure Eudora to use our Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
    1. Select the SSL menu on the left.
    2. From the SSL for POP drop down menu, select Required (alternate port).
    3. In the section Standard Port SSL Negotiation, select Maximum Compatibility.
    4. In the section Alternate Port SSL Negotiation, select Maximum Compatibility.

  10. Set your Checking Mail options to get email easily and manage email to avoid problems with your account. Use the configurations illustrated and typed below, and click OK.

    Connection settings
    Check option to check for mail every 15 minutes.
    Mail Management
    Check option to leave mail on server for 5 days. (This lets you collect mail from other computers, or with SquirrelMail, yet cleans your mail server inbox.)
    Check option to delete from server when emptied from the trash.
    (This also helps to clean your mail server inbox. You will not see these messages when checking your account from other computers, or with SquirrelMail.)
    Uncheck option to skip messages over 40K.
  11. Set up directory services, to easily find other Haverford email addresses.
  12. Configure other settings as desired. This might include setting up folders or filters to help organize email.
