Frequently Asked Questions about Viruses

What is a virus?

A computer virus is a computer program which attaches to programs or documents, and then copies itself into more programs or documents. Some viruses do nothing more than copy themselves, but many can slow your system to a crawl, damage or destroy files, capture sensitive information, or prevent you from starting your system. Even if a virus does not seem to have adverse effects on your system it may create serious problems for another system or Haverford's network.

Are viruses really a problem?

Yes. Over the years we have seen numerous viruses on campus. Some of these have slowed systems to the point they were unusable, damaged or destroyed files, and prevented users from starting their systems. They have also seriously hampered the effectiveness of our network.

As a result of these problems, Haverford has instituted numerous safeguards to protect systems and our network. It is critical that you adhere to our guidelines for the protection of your computer, as well as the protection of our network.

How can I protect my computer from getting a virus?

While there is no guarantee against viruses, following the guidelines to Protect Your Computer will minimize your risk.

Can I use my own anti-virus software?

No. You must install the software we specially configured for our network. Failure to do this may result in a loss of network privileges.

Why doesn't my Macintosh VirusScan software update properly?
The current version of VirusScan should update properly. Try reinstalling the software, carefully following all instructions. If you continue to have problems, contact the Help Desk.
I want to adjust my VirusScan for Windows settings, but my interface is locked? Can I unlock it?

Yes. We locked the interface to prevent you from accidentally changing your setting, which were created with your protection in mind. However, you may change your settings if you have a good reason to do so. Follow the instructions to Unlock the User Interface on VirusScan for Windows.

What should I do if I get a virus on my computer?

If your anti-virus software is unable to repair or delete the infected file, contact the Help Desk. See Where can I get more help? for contact information.
