Virus Protection on your Windows Computer

All Windows computers on the Haverford network must follow the steps below to install our specially configured anti-virus software, keep this software up-to-date, regularly scan your system, and follow other safe computing practices to secure your computer.

1. Install the anti-virus software on your computer.
   • Install VirusScan 8.5 for Windows Vista
   • Install VirusScan 8.5 for Windows XP
2. Once the software is installed, it must be continually updated with information about current viruses. Your software should update automatically. However, you can update your virus definitions manually at any time.

3. Your virus software is always on in the background, making sure that files your create and receive are free of viruses. However, it is still possible for a virus to sneak onto your system. After you determine that you have the most recent virus definitions, scan your computer to make is free of all currently known viruses.

4. In addition to protecting your system from viruses, you need to protect it against other security threats and data loss. These include operating system vulnerabilities and hardware failures.

5. Adhere to all email alerts sent by ACC. However, before taking an action recommended in an email, please confirm that the email is legitimate. Many emails requesting action are bogus. ACC posts a detailed description of all our alerts on our web site, http://www.haverford.edu/acc/bulletins/.
