Limiting Access to Web Pages

By default, files posted to www can be viewed by anyone who can browse the web. Files in wwwinternal volume however, can be viewed only from computers on the Haverford, Bryn Mawr, or Swarthmore campuses (or those on the network via remote access, such as dial-up or VPN).

As explained in the section on Determining your URL, files in www are viewable on www.haverford.edu; those on wwwinternal are viewable on www.haverford.edu:8080.

However, the location of your files is only one way to limit access to web pages. With the current web server, you have a number of options for limiting access, both in the type of access limits you wish to impose and your method for executing those limits. You may

  • Limit access rights by computer location, such as allowing access to computers at Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and/or Haverford campuses only
  • Limit access by password, requiring those browsing your site to know a specified login and password before viewing files
  • Use Blackboard to limit access to students in a specific course

If you wish to limit access to one or more web pages, contact your computing support liaison. Your liaison can help you determine the best type access for your data, and see that the desired access privileges are granted.

For Questions and Comments, contact Haverford College's Academic Computing Center.
