Posting to www.haverford.edu FAQ
Who can post to the College web server? All faculty, most academic staff, and many administrators may publish or update web pages within their departmental web sites. Details about how to edit your website on webpublish.haverford.edu are located at http://www2.haverford.edu/webdev/publishing Are there any policies regarding what I can post?Yes. A variety of policies guide what you may publish on the Haverford College web server. If you wish to publish materials outside the bounds of those policies, you may locate a commercial or other web service provider. How can I update existing pages?Replace the existing web server file with the current page information. Be careful to make sure the new filename is exactly the same as the original, including its folder location and capitalization. For more information see Maintaining your Web Pages. I don't seem to have privileges to edit my files. Why not?Make sure you are logging onto webpublish.haverford.edu with your email username and email password, and attempting to post your files in the correct folder. If you believe you are accessing your web space correctly, contact your liaison. There may be a problem with the web server or with your account on the web server. How come I have two files by the same name in my directory on the web server?Did you use FTP to post your files? If so, you may have two files that differ only by capitalization. See Special Issues with FTP for details on the problem and solution. Why do I have a file ending in "~###"? I did not put it there?Did you use FTP to post your files? If so, you may have two files that differ only by capitalization. However, because the Macintosh and Windows operating system will not allow two such similarly named files, they add a random file ending to one of the two files. See Special Issues with FTP for details on the problem and solution. Other than me, who can edit my web files? In academic directories, others in your department and the administrative assistants have access to edit your files. In addition, we will grant additional access upon request. In administrative directories, you need to contact our webmaster to see who has access, or to request additional access privileges. I have a student helping me with my web site. How does he/she get access to post the updated pages?Contact your liaison with the student's name, the directory to which you wish to grant access, and the length of time you would like to grant that access. I get the following error message in Dreamweaver, "Cannot display the remote folder. The specified network password is not correct...."You are trying to log onto the web server with the wrong password. This may happen if you are using Dreamweaver on a Windows computer, and your NT password is different from your email password. Follow the instructions in our section on How to Post, using your email password to mount webpublish.haverford.edu. I get the following error message in Dreamweaver, "Cannot display the remote folder. The specified path does not exist...."Dreamweaver cannot find the web server. Follow the instruction in our section on How to Post, using your email username and password to mount webpublish.haverford.edu. My web site is buried deep within the College web site and no one can find it. How can I make it more prominent?Although you may not have direct control over how your site is linked from the Haverford College home page or your departmental home page, you can contact those in control of these pages and make a request. See the section on Announcing Your Pages for suggestions. What happened to the Gopher Server?Macintosh users who posted to the web server prior to July 5, 2004 knew the College web server as the "Gopher Server". This web server, which ran on a Macintosh, was replaced with a UNIX based server on July 5, 2004. The new server where you edit your files, now called "webpublish.haverford.edu" to web publishers, should hold the same files and grant you the same access as the previous Gopher Server did. However, you will need to reconfigure your desktop computer to work with this server. If you notice any differences, please contact your computing liaison. The current server works the same for those browsing www.haverford.edu, but should be more reliable and a bit faster.
