Making Student Home Pages
To publish your web pages, you just have to copy
them into your directory on the student web server.
Once you have copied the files, here are some things you
will want to know.
- Is there a template I can use to get started
with my home page?
Yes, you can download from the File
menu by selecting the Save as..." option. You will see a standard
save menu, where you can select the file name, location, and file
type.
Depending on your computer and browser, may have the option to save
in a variety of formats. Select the HTML, Web or Source format.
- What is my web address (a.k.a. URL)?
Your web address or URL is
- http://students.haverford.edu/username/filename.html
Of course, you replace "username" with your
own username, and "filename.html" with any file path you want.
- Is there a special name I should use for my
home page?
Yes. Use "home.html". If somebody just asks for
- http://students.haverford.edu/username/
the file home.html will automatically be returned
if it exists. This is a common way to provide the address of your
home page.
- Is there a list of student home pages at Haverford?
Yes, it's located at http://students.haverford.edu/
- Is it true that my home page will be added
to the list automatically?
Yes. By default, students who have a "home.html" or "home.htm"
file in their web directory will be included on the list.
If you do not want to be included in the list, place an empty
file named "noindex" in your directory.
The list is generated automatically on a nightly basis; you will
need
to wait a day for your name to be added to or removed from the list.
- How much space do I have for my files?
We have allocated 2 GB per student, including your web files and
other files on the Storage server. See About
Space Allotment on the Storage Server (Quotas) for details.
- Do you have any documentation or classes on
making Web documents?
Most information about student web pages linked from the web page
on Creating and Publishing Student Web
Pages. A Dreamweaver
Tutorial will help you create the actual page.
- Can you recommend a good HTML editor I can
use to make my pages?
The ACC has site licensed and keyserved Dreamweaver for use on the
Macintosh and Windows computers. These are available from our Download
software page for use while on-campus.
