The recipient of the 2008 Haverford Award: Edwards P. Schwentker '63
Edwards (Ned) P. Schwentker, M.D.
Ned was born in New York City but moved with his family to Baltimore at age 5 when his father accepted a position on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Ned followed his older brother, Fritz (Frederick N. Schwentker) to Haverford College where he majored in Biology and graduated with a BS degree in 1963.
Ned spent the year between college and medical school as a research assistant in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at Johns Hopkins. He married Nancy (Bunny) Ravitch on June 5, 1964 and entered the JHU School of Medicine shortly thereafter graduating in 1968.
He completed his internship and a year of assistant residency in General Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh followed by 3 years of Orthopaedic Residency also at Pitt. In 1973/74 he completed a Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.
Ned joined the Medical Staff of the Alfred I. DuPont Institute in Wilmington DE in 1974. After two years he joined the faculty of the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA as an Assistant Professor. In addition to practicing as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon He was the Medical Director of Rehabilitation for 24 years. He retired from clinical practice, at least in the USA, in 2000 to devote his time to the undergraduate medical education program at the College of Medicine. He will retire as a Professor of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation and Pediatrics at the end of this June.
Ned had the opportunity to spend 3 months at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, the Bahamas during his orthopaedic residency. There he acquired an interest in working in another culture, in another country, and for caring for underserved patients. In 1989 he was recruited by Project HOPE as a pediatric orthopedic consultant to a pediatric rehabilitation program that was created to help deal with the devastating earthquake in Armenia of December 1988. Ned returned twice more to Armenia in 1990 and ’91. These projects were very satisfying, but he was looking for something closer to home where they spoke a language he might be able to learn.
An opportunity developed in 1995 to provide pediatric orthopaedic care to poor children in San Pedro Sula Honduras. There he found a home and to date Ned has led 24 short-term projects to that city. He and his team have evaluated over 4500 children and have provided operative treatment for over 1100. In 2004 our program affiliated with CURE International (www.cureinternational.org). CURE is now building a 20-bed/2-operating room pediatric orthopaedic hospital in San Pedro Sula. Construction will be completed this summer. Ned and his wife will move to Honduras in September to run the hospital for at least 2 full years. For he and his wife this adventure will be the fulfillment of a 13 year-old dream.
Since the beginning Ned and his team have worked with and trained Honduran orthopaedic surgeons. In the new hospital they will establish a pediatric orthopaedic residency rotation for Honduran orthopaedic residents. In addition they have provided opportunities for global health experience for Penn State medical students and orthopaedic residents. They will continue to recruit medical students and residents, but once they are in Honduras full-time, they would like to extend such opportunities to undergraduates from Penn State and, hopefully, from Haverford College.
Ned is still married to Bunny, his partner in all that has been good in his life. They have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. Ann, his eldest, is a pediatric plastic surgeon. She will come to Honduras to work with the group periodically. Pam is a grade school teacher currently working as a full-time mom and Mark, the youngest, is an actor. "It is he that is responsible for my inability to attend the Reunion Weekend to accept this Honor as that is the date he and his bride have chosen to be married. I am very grateful and humbled to be chosen for this Honor."
