Rutgers-Camden Defeats Haverford, 13-5;
Einbinder Homers in Fords Season Opener
CAMDEN, NJ - Host Rutgers-Camden (2-1
overall) scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route
to a 13-5 victory over Haverford College (0-1) Thursday afternoon
in non-conference baseball action. Senior shortstop Ben Einbinder
hit his first home run of the season and the 25th of his career
in the losing effort for the Fords.
Haverford started the game with two base runners, as freshman Jake
Kaden walked and senior Ben Field was hit by a pitch. But after
a strikeout, both runners were picked off ending the top of the
first.
Rutgers-Camden jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of
the first inning. Sophomore second baseman Jamie Hollowell registered
the first hit of the season for the Fords with a one out base hit
to right field with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Hollowell
followed his single with a stolen base, but a strikeout and a weak
ground out to the pitcher ended Haverford's attempt at a rally.
The Scarlet Raptors plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth
to distance themselves from the Fords, 7-0. With one out in the
top of the fifth, junior Steve Andelman was hit by a pitch. Freshman
Robbie Crabtree followed with a single to left field and Hollowell
walked to load up the bases. After a Haverford strikeout, Kaden
drove in the first Haverford runs of the season with a two-run single
through the left side of the infield to make the score 7-2.
Rutgers-Camden extended its lead to 11-2
after five innings before Einbinder clocked a 400+ foot solo home
run to left center field to make the score 11-3 after the top of
the sixth inning. Rutgers-Camden added two more runs in the bottom
of the sixth, making the score 13-3. Haverford followed with two
runs of their own with two outs in the top of the eighth inning
on a RBI single by junior Drew Wilcox along with a Scarlet Raptors
fielding error, plating Einbinder and junior catcher Will Stafford.
The game was called after the Fords batted in the eighth due to
darkness.
Senior Tim Whitman gave up two runs in five innings to earn his
first win of the season for the Scarlet Raptors. Haverford starting
pitcher senior pitcher Travis Zier took the loss for the Fords,
giving up three runs (one earned) in three innings of work. Einbinder
finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and one
run batted in.
