Club Sports
Competitive intercollegiate athletics at Haverford are not limited to our 23 varsity teams.
The club sports program at Haverford College is designed to provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a variety of sports activities. Members of clubs sports teams are responsible for the administration and organization of their club activities. Haverford clubs are supported by Students' Council, the Athletic Department and the Deans' Office.
What is a club sport?
A club sport is a registered student organization intended to promote the common interests of a particular sport or activity through participation and competition.
Participation in a club sport is completely voluntary. Membership is open to all current students regardless of skill level. No student may be discriminated against by any organization at Haverford College for reasons of age, color, ethnic or national origin, disability, marital status, political or social affiliation, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation.
To be recognized as a club sport at Haverford, each organization must agree to abide by the guidelines and expectations outlined the Club Sports Handbook.
Club sport practices and matches are limited to Haverford and Bryn Mawr college students whose names appear on the official roster. Alumni/ae or students on leave are specifically excluded.
Eligibility for some club sports may depend on various league or divisional rules established by outside organizations. Practices and schedules vary since all activities are organized and administered by students.
Recognized Clubs
- Badminton
The coed badminton club practices and competes throughout the winter and spring. The club has scrimmaged with nearby colleges and played in tournaments in the past, and will face college varsities this year in the Philadelphia AIAW league.
For more information, contact Sally Wu or Stephen Sacchetti. - Crew
Haverford's growing crew program has been in existence since 1998, and boasts lively men's and women's teams that compete in the fall and spring in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. The team currently shares boathouse space with Villanova University on the upper Schuylkill River in Conshohocken, only 15 minutes from campus. The team's coach since 2001 is Valeria Gospodinov, an Olympic medalist for Bulgaria and former assistant coach for the Bulgarian national team. The crew practices daily in the spring and fall in the afternoons and follows an intense conditioning program during the winter. Rowers and coxswains of all experience levels (including complete novices) are welcome on the team every year.
For recruiting (and general) information, contact Lauren Dickey or Evan Raskin. - Golf
With its campus adjacent to Merion GC's East Course - host of three U.S. Opens (1950, 1971, 1981) and the 2005 U.S. Amateur - Haverford resumed intercollegiate golf in 1999 after a decade-and-a-half hiatus.
Despite its club status, Haverford competes successfully against NCAA Division III varsity teams, practicing and hosting matches at Merion West in both the fall and spring seasons. The annual schedule culminates at the multi-day Centennial Conference Championships (54 holes for men, 36 holes for women).
For more information on the men's golf club team, contact Paul Schifflet. - Men's Rugby
The Haverford Men's Rugby Club offers males at Haverford the opportunity to engage in the physically and mentally challenging sport of rugby. Rugby is a physical contact sport for everyone. People of all sizes and abilities are needed for the myriad of facets and aspects of the game. Rugby is perhaps one of the most team-focused sports as every person of the 15 on the field is vital and important to the team's success in the game. Furthermore, rugby is not a game of pretenses and exclusion, but rather one of inclusion.
The Club will practice three times per week and play in several matches each semester.
For more information, please contact Alex Davies or Owen Drake.
- Men's Volleyball
The Men's Volleyball team joined the Mid-Atlantic Conference of Volleyball Clubs (MACVC) in 1996. Since then, the team has qualified for postseason play six times ('96-'98 and ‘04-'06) and won its first East division title in ‘06. They practice and play in the new Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.
The regular season consists of 12-15 matches, plus a few tournaments, in January through April each year. The top 16 teams in the 34 team super-conference then compete in a one day championship event. The team is less of a time commitment than a varsity team, but the level of competitiveness is comparable to that of a varsity sport.
Any man or woman from the Bi-Co community is welcome and encouraged to attend practices, but only Haverford men are permitted to compete in real matches.
Contact Matt Scheinerman for more information. - Men's / Women's Ultimate Frisbee
Ultimate frisbee is one of Haverford's largest athletic clubs, sometimes on a coed basis, often splitting into men's and women's clubs for practices and competitions. "Ultimate" is a unique athletic activity combining elements of many field sports. At Haverford, the ultimate teams practice and play fall and spring. At least once a year, a tournament is held on campus involving dozens of teams and a full weekend of matches.
For more information about ultimate frisbee at Haverford, please contact Ella Willard-Schmoe or Ashley Brichter for the women's team and Ryan Chudd or Mike Lipsitz.
for the men's team.
- Women's Soccer
The women's club soccer team is made up of a great group of women who love to play soccer. We play games against club teams from other colleges in the area, both at home and away. Each season we usually play local Philadelphia teams such as Penn and Drexel, but we also travel to other schools that are within about hour of us, such as Princeton. We practice 2-3 times per week and play between 5-8 games per season.
Club soccer is designed to be competitive and fun and we'd love to have you come join us at any practice!
Please contact Isabel Clark or Laura Care if you're interested.
Clubs that do not participate in intercollegiate competition are considered Student Activities and may contact the Student Activities office for assistance. Like all student activities at Haverford College, sport and recreational clubs and organizations are self governing and must follow the guidelines and responsibilities outlined in the Constitution of the Haverford College Students' Association.
